So that said... Here is my explanation:
I used to love it. I did. It was really handy to see if those off the path hotels or tours were really flea ridden dives or just a way to drive you around in a people mover for 5 hours and take your money. I did use it a lot. The last few years however I just find that its lots of things that just aren't in my budget. The forums was where I mostly used to hang, but now I find I can find that information easier with a specific search. Searching just via the net, also seems to give me more current information.
They are all about the bookings: I find that Trip Adivsors primary focus now is bookings so the traveller part of the website has really dropped off. Often I do find a trip adviser link for something I'm searching for but when I get there it's often from 2011. I just don't have time to waste on outdated info.
The reviews are also less than ideal. You see things like "the rooms are small". OK - smaller than your own bedroom, small for a suite, what specifically does small mean to you? I can see that from the pics, I don't need you to tell me the rooms are small. The other thing I find is that the comments don't seem to be balanced. The old you tell 10 people about crap service but only tell one about good service seems to reign supreme here. Sure you want to know if you are going to come away with scabbies so you read the bad comments, but the good ones seem to be so over the top I discard them anyway. If I do that - I'm not getting any help really so I just don't bother. If someone got fleas and then the next week someone else says its the best place they ever stayed - I don't trust any of it. That just doesn't seem realistic feedback to me.
The level of accommodation is always more than I really want to spend unless of course we are having a splurge somewhere so I don't' usually search on Trip Advisor for a hotel. If I'm looking for something specific sure, I might jump on and search a specific hotel, but I'm more likely to search via Google than via Trip Advisor.
So sorry - Trip Advisor, not a huge fan.
