I had always stayed with self inflating matresses primarily as if they started leading at least I had some padding under me. Unfortunatly I seem to have some kind of weird luck (or anti-luck) with sleeping pads and having spent a good amount of money on three different pads that all sprang some kind of leak after a month or two I decided to bite the bullet and get an inflatable pad instead.
I also carry a fold up foam to put under my sleep pad (you heard about the leaks right?) so I felt I could stretch to a limited period on the pad alone should I get yet another leak.
I initially had a Thermarest inflatable but that thing was so noisy and rustly it drove me mad. I'm sure it was fine but I was constantly on edge feeling like I was waking other campers up and that's not a great feeling. So I have moved to a Klymit Static V and while I've only used it on small trips so far I do like it. It is much more comfortable that you imagine and its quieter and also insulated which is great as I'm a very cold sleeper.
