A Guide to Exploring the Gold Coast Hinterland
Many travelers to the Gold Coast stick to the iconic beaches and bustling cityscapes, missing out on the natural beauty and tranquil charm of the hinterland.
A short hours drive up the mountain from the Gold Coast and you will find yourself walking through lush rainforests, discovering cascading waterfalls, and breathing in the fresh mountain air. In this guide, we’ll take you on a journey through the Gold Coast Hinterland, highlighting the must-visit spots, hidden gems, and activities that make this region an unmissable part of your trip.
Start at Lamington National Park, where rainforests and waterfalls like Elabana Falls await. Springbrook National Park has ancient forests and the Natural Bridge’s glow worms. On Tamborine Mountain, find vibrant rainforests and the Skywalk. Lets get to it!
Lamington National Park
Lamington National Park is in Australia’s Gold Coast Hinterland. It offers lush rainforests, waterfalls, and wildlife. Trails take you through towering trees and dense canopies with the sunlight filtered through the heavy leaf canopy. I love Lamington National Park and I would consider it to be possibly the least visiting National Park in the Hinterland.
Lamington NP has 2 main trail head centres. Binna Burra and O’Reillys. Binna Burra is easier and shorter to get to from the Gold Coast, so accordingly its more popular. O’Reillys adds about 30 mins to your drive so it is a little quieter.
Both trail heads have some great hikes ranging in length from a few kilometers to over 20km. There is even a walk that goes between the two. I mention some great hikes further down the page.
Look out for wildlife like the Albert’s lyrebird and crimson rosella. Lamington is a haven for nature lovers.
There are trails for all. Whether you love hiking or just strolling, Lamington has something for you.
Locals Tip:
As a local we often refer to Binna Burra as being in Springbrook national park. I know its not but a lot of locals will say “go to Springbrook” and direct you to the trailhead at Binna Burra so just know those two names are used interchangeably.
Getting To Binna Burra Trail Head
This Google Maps route will take you from Pacific Fair shopping centre (an easy to find central location) to Binna Burra. It is approximately an hours drive.
Getting To O’Reilly’s Trail Head
Add an extra half an hour to get to O’Reilly’s trailhead. This Google Maps route will take you to O’Reilly’s, also starting from Pac Fair.
Springbrook National Park
Venture into Springbrook National Park, where you’ll be enchanted by its dramatic landscapes, ancient forests, and panoramic views that stretch as far as the eye can see. As you wander through this lush wonderland, you’ll start to notice how relaxed you are getting.
Aside from the beautiful forest, the park’s undulating terrain removes any boredom from the trails. You never quite know what’s around the next turn.
Things To See In Springbrook National Park
Just be aware, that while I mention the main trailheads above, some of the locations I mention are in a different place. There are links to all locations via Google maps so you should be able to navigate your way around easily.
Please be aware that if you don’t have a 4wd, be very careful parking off the verge. While it might be a gorgeous day, it might have poured with rain overnight and be very muddy under the grass.
Start your journey at the Natural Bridge, a geological marvel carved by the force of the creeks fast flowing waters. Here, sunlight filters through the canopy, casting dappled light onto the pool below, where (if you are lucky) glow-worms twinkle like stars come nightfall.
The glow worms are always there, but it has to be pretty dark to see them well. Make sure you have a good light to get back to the carpark if you stay until after dark.
NB: The circuit around Natural Bridge has stairs.
Continue along the network of trails, each offering its own unique encounters. The Twin Falls Circuit will lead you past cascading waterfalls and through verdant rainforests. Feel the invigorating spray on your face as you stand beneath the falls, a liberating experience that awakens your senses.
If the kids are getting a bit fractious, consider a stop at Bochow Park where there is a kids playground where you can run off some of the extra energy!
Don’t miss the Best of All Lookout, perched on the edge of an ancient volcanic rim. The view out toward the coast is spectacular from here, however if its cloudy it is one place that seems to be most affected.
Tamborine Mountain
Exploring the enchanting allure of Springbrook National Park, you’ll come across Tamborine Mountain, a vibrant tapestry of lush rainforests, quaint villages, and stunning vistas that beckon for exploration and discovery. As you meander through this tranquil haven, embrace the freedom of the open trails and the welcoming hum of nature.
There are two villages at the top of the mountain, Eagle Heights and North Tamborine. They are different but only about 4 mins drive apart. There is a walkway between the two but it is a busy road so not super suitable for children. I prefer Eagle Heights as I love the Gallery Walk and the brewing co.
Tamborine Mountain promises an escape from the everyday, offering unique experiences that awaken the soul and ignite your sense of adventure. Here, you can immerse yourself in:
- Gallery Walk, Eagle Heights: Wander down this charming street lined with boutique shops, art galleries, and delightful cafes.
- Tamborine Rainforest Skywalk: Enjoy a thrilling perspective from high above the forest floor, capturing breathtaking views. Its a couple of minutes drive from north Tamboine.
- Fortitude Brewing Co: aligned with a local cheese maker, this is the perfect place for a cold one and a cheese platter.
- Glow Worm Caves: Explore an enchanting underground world illuminated by the soft glow of these fascinating creatures.
- Cedar Creek Estate: Indulge in locally crafted wines while savoring the scenic beauty of the vineyards. This is the location of the glow worm caves so if you feel like you are in the wrong place to see the glow worms, you aren’t
- Botanic Gardens: Lose yourself among exotic plants and tranquil ponds, perfect for a peaceful afternoon. You will be pleasantly surprised by the range and quality of plants here. They even have a Japanese garden.
- Laser skirmish, Treetops Challenge and mini golf can all be found at Thunderbird Park, about 5-8 mins drive from North Tamborine.
Every corner of Tamborine Mountain offers an opportunity to escape routine, inviting you to explore, unwind, and reconnect with the wonders of nature.
Scenic Lookout Spots
Prepare to be captivated by the sweeping vistas and awe-inspiring panoramas at the scenic lookout spots in the Gold Coast Hinterland, where nature’s grandeur unfolds before your eyes. As you journey through this enchanting region, you’ll discover that each lookout offers a unique perspective on the lush landscapes below. The cascading waterfalls add a symphony of sound to your visual feast, inviting you to linger a little longer and soak in the serenity.
Imagine standing atop a cliff, with the wind whispering tales of adventure as you gaze across ancient forests stretching to the horizon. Here’s a quick guide to some must-visit spots:
Lookout Name | Highlights |
Best of All Lookout | Views of Tweed Valley and beyond |
Purling Brook Falls | Majestic waterfall and rainforest |
Springbrook Nat Park Canyon Lookout | Expansive coastal panoramas |
Each location offers its own magic, whether it’s the ethereal mist enveloping Purling Brook or the vibrant hues of a sunset at Springbrook Plateau. You’ll feel an exhilarating sense of freedom, as if the world has paused just for you to capture its beauty. Embrace the journey and let these lookouts become the backdrop to your adventure.
While the vista’s mentioned above are all easy to find and get to, you can get some amazing views if you are prepared to do some decent kilometers. This one below is the view from Ship Stern Circuit which leaves from the trailhead at Binna Burra. The hike is over 20km though.
Hiking and Walking Trails
As you lace up your hiking boots, get ready to explore some of the Gold Coast Hinterland’s most popular scenic routes, where breathtaking views await at every turn.
Along these trails, you’ll encounter a vibrant tapestry of wildlife and flora, from colorful parrots flitting through the trees to lush ferns carpeting the forest floor.
Each path holds its own unique wonders, inviting you to immerse yourself in nature’s beauty and discover the region’s hidden gems.
Popular Scenic Hiking Trails
Nestled within the lush expanse of the Gold Coast Hinterland, you’ll find an array of scenic hiking and walking trails that promise breathtaking views and unforgettable experiences. Whether you’re a seasoned hiker or a leisurely walker, these routes offer a taste of adventure with every step.
Picture yourself meandering through verdant rainforests, past cascading waterfalls, and up to panoramic vistas that stretch as far as the eye can see. The links for the hikes below will all take you to the All Trails map. You can get directions from there to the trail heads and I would advise downloading the map so you have it if you loose cell signal.
Imagine setting your own pace and choosing from these popular routes:
- Purling Brook Falls Circuit: A moderate 4km loop that takes you past a stunning 100m waterfall, offering both dramatic views and serene forest paths.
- Twin Falls Circuit: With only 190m elevation change (that is down and up) this is a great starter hike for anyone looking at getting into bushwalking. 4.3km and I would consider it easy. Of course its a waterfall walk so it is down to the falls and back up to the trailhead.
- Elbana Falls and Picnic Rock Trail: An out and back trail. This is just over 7km long and not terribly difficult. There are some shallow creeks to sit in but do be careful because the rocks are very slippery.
- Coomera Circuit Walk: At 17km this is not just a leasurely stroll. It is very pretty though and you may see one of the famous blue crayfish! I’ve never managed to see one and I’ve done this hike many times, but they are seen very regularly on this and Warrie Circuit.
- MacDonald Rainforest Walk: A leisurely 5km path through dense foliage, ideal for a peaceful escape.
- Binna Burra to O’Reilly’s: A 23km trail for the adventurous, offering diverse landscapes and some amazing bush. This is a one way track from the Binna Burra Trailhead to O’Reilly’s trailhead. Being a good 40 mins apart you will have to plan your return well by leaving a car at the other end. Alternatively there is a bus between the two that runs in the mornings Saturday and Sunday. Get in tough with Binna Burra Tea House and they can explain how it works and the cost.
Let these trails guide you towards a magnificent exploration of the hinterlands rainforest wonders.
Wildlife and Flora Highlights
Explore these trails, and you’ll discover the vibrant tapestry of wildlife and flora that thrives within the Gold Coast Hinterland’s diverse ecosystems.
Lace up your boots and set off on the Rainforest Circuit at Lamington National Park, where lush canopies shelter you from the sun, but please don’t ignore sun protection.
Head to Springbrook National Park, where the Twin Falls Circuit offers a chance to marvel at cascading waterfalls surrounded by ancient Antarctic beech trees. This trail is a haven for tree frogs and glow worms, which light up the night like stars. It’s an enchanting experience that makes you feel part of a different world.
For a challenge, try the Border Track, connecting these two parks. Here, the landscape shifts dramatically, revealing subtropical rainforests and open woodlands. Keep an eye out for wallabies and koalas lounging in the gum trees. Each step you take is a journey into the wild heart of the hinterland, offering an escape that feeds your adventurous spirit.
Local Wildlife Encounters
Spot kangaroos hopping through the open fields or catch a glimpse of colorful parrots flitting between the trees as you explore the Gold Coast Hinterland’s vibrant wildlife offerings. This region is a paradise for wildlife enthusiasts, where every turn in the trail may lead to a new and exciting encounter. Embrace the thrill of spotting elusive creatures in their natural habitat, and let your adventurous spirit soar as you explore this wild expanse.
As you wander through the lush rainforests and open woodlands, keep your eyes peeled for:
- Wallabies: These shy creatures often peek out from the underbrush—an iconic sight of the Australian wilderness.
- Koalas: Look up into the eucalyptus trees where these furry marsupials lazily nap. Don’t expect to see a Koala in most of this area. Its not their habitat and while some people do see the odd one, it is usually closer to the coast where the eucalyptus is more prevalent.
- Lyrebirds: Renowned for their incredible mimicry, listen for their unique sounds echoing through the forest. Again they are hard to spot here. I have seen them but they do like the dryer region mostly. A little bit further out toward Warrick on the Main Range you will see some for sure.
- Platypai: If you’re near a serene stream, you might spot these peculiar creatures paddling through the water. And yes the multiple of platypus is platypai not platypuses!
- Bowerbirds: Marvel at their elaborately decorated nests designed to attract mates.
Embrace the freedom of the wild and allow each encounter to fill you with a sense of wonder. Here, nature reveals its secrets to those who choose to venture off the beaten path.
The best place to see Kangaroos, Koala’s and even goannas is Coomera Wetlands. Its completely flat so the kids will love it and you don’t have to go very far to see many kangaroos. Its actually called Coombabah Lake Conservation Park but everyone calls it Coomera Wetlands. There is actually a day tour that does Coombabah Wetlands AND Tamborine which is really worth it. I did it with my mother in law a few weeks ago and she loved it!
Scenic Drives and Tours
Take a journey through the Gold Coast Hinterland by setting out on scenic drives and tours that reveal the region’s stunning landscapes and hidden gems. You’ll find yourself weaving through lush, green rainforests and along winding mountain roads.
Feel the freedom as you explore the Lamington National Park, a World Heritage site teeming with vibrant flora and fauna. Here, you can stop and take in panoramic views from the iconic O’Reilly’s Rainforest Retreat.
Gold Coast to O’Reilly’s Via Canungra
This drive showcases a wide range of forestation levels and will take you from the low lands out through Nerang over the mountain to Canungra, a small village that gets very busy on the weekends. This is a popular road with the road bike crowd so keep your eyes peeled. Some of them aren’t the safest riders and its easy to not even know they are they until they go flying past you.
You should stop at Canungra and head to the pie shop. You can’t miss it! It has good coffee and great pies with a super wide variety. It does get busy though so make sure you have enough time to stop. There is also a toilet at the little park in Canungra.
Leaving Canungra you will head up toward O’Reilly’s which is a gorgeous drive. You wind your way through farming country before it changes in to low lying rainforest and then into lush high rainfall rainforest. It is beautiful. You can go for a small walk at O’Reilly’s, see the bird feeding, eat some lunch and then head back. It isn’t a through road so O’Reilly’s will be your end point.
Tamborine Mountain To Tamborine
For a drive that features the winding rainforest lined roads of the area, venture along the Tamborine Mountain Road. This route will lead you from the charming village of North Tamborine to Tamborine township. Stop at Cedar Creek Falls for a swim, or Thunderbird park for a quick coffee and cake.
It is a very windy road but its beautiful. If you open your windows you can often hear the bell birds. You will know when you hear them – they sound like bells. As an interesting fact, the first “ring” is the female bird and the second “dong” is the male response. I’ve never heard just one and it is one of my favourite sounds in the world. If you hear them you will hear them for a while.
Do A Tour and Let Someone Else Drive
Join a guided tour to explore further into the hinterland’s secrets. Expert guides will share stories of the land and its history, offering a perspective you’d miss on your own.
There are winery tours, glow worm and rainforest tours, and even luxury food and distillery tours available from both Brisbane and the Gold Coast
Food and Wine Experiences
If you are a foodie, don’t despair, there are many options to placate your palate. Savour locally crafted wines while overlooking lush vineyards or indulging in gourmet dishes inspired by the freshest local produce. The Hinterland offers a palette of flavors that will captivate any food lover or wine enthusiast.
Explore boutique wineries where passionate vintners share their craft, and taste wines that are as unique as the landscape they’re born from. Dive into the culinary scene, where innovative chefs transform seasonal ingredients into mouthwatering delights.
Here are some experiences you won’t want to miss:
- Mount Tamborine’s wineries: Sample award-winning wines and enjoy breathtaking views.
- Farmers’ markets: Discover fresh produce, artisanal cheeses, and homemade goodies.
- Cozy cafes: Relish freshly brewed coffee paired with decadent pastries.
- Gourmet picnics: Enjoy a meal surrounded by nature, with bespoke picnic hampers.
- Cooking classes: Learn to create dishes using local ingredients from expert chefs.
These experiences offer a delectable escape from the ordinary, inviting you to savor the region’s essence, one bite and sip at a time.
If you are after a more family friendly meal, consider the Eagle Heights Hotel. It looks out over the city so has a great view and the ribs are amazing. At $50 their not cheap but unless you are a very big eater, they can easily be shared between two. We often get a seafood chowder and the ribs and share both.
The trick with the ribs it to not get too invested in the chips. They are AMAZING but if you eat too many chips, you have to leave the ribs and that just isn’t Australian!
If you are visiting over the weekend I would recommend booking a table.
